Real Rotherham job

Driveway & forecourt transformation

A tired block-paved driveway and gravel forecourt, dug out and relaid in a charcoal and buff block paving blend with new edging and drainage falls.

This is the kind of transformation we do most — a driveway that has seen better days, replaced with a properly built, well-drained surface that suits the house. No pressure, no upselling — just an honest look at what your driveway needs and a fair price for doing it properly.

What we do

Driveway installation & patio paving across Rotherham

From a full driveway replacement to a new garden patio, every job starts with proper groundwork — dig out, sub-base, edgings and drainage — before we lay the surface you choose.

A few jobs from around South Yorkshire — Indian sandstone patios, groundworks and finished driveways.

Why homeowners choose us

The base matters more than the surface

Most driveway and patio failures are not surface problems — they are base problems. A driveway that sinks or ruts, or a patio that rocks underfoot, almost always had too little excavation or an under-compacted sub-base.

  • Dug out to the right depth. We excavate to suit the ground and the load, not to whatever is quickest.
  • Compacted in layers. Sub-base material is whacked in layers so it consolidates properly through the full depth.
  • Edges restrained. Blocks and slabs are held by a proper edge course so nothing spreads or rocks over time.
  • Water sent somewhere sensible. Falls and drainage designed in from the start, never an afterthought.

Laying course Screeded bedding
Sub-base — MOT Type 1 100–150mm, compacted in layers
Sub-grade Excavated & assessed

Depths shown are typical for a domestic driveway carrying cars. Soft clay, made ground or a recently dug service run all need deeper excavation — we assess it at dig stage rather than working to a fixed number.

Choosing a surface

Block paving, resin, tarmac or concrete?

There is no single best driveway surface — there is the one that suits your property, your budget and how you use the space. Here is an honest comparison of everything we install.

Driveway surfaces compared
Block paving Resin bound Tarmac Concrete
Look Patterned and traditional. Widest choice of colour and laying bond. Smooth, seamless, contemporary. Natural stone colours. Plain, uniform black. Understated. Clean and uniform; can be brushed, coloured or textured.
Drainage Permeable versions available; standard blocks need falls and drainage. Permeable — water passes through the surface. Impermeable — needs falls to a drain or soakaway. Impermeable — needs falls to a drain or soakaway.
Weeds & joints Sand-filled joints can need topping up and occasional weeding. No joints, so very little for weeds to root in. Continuous surface, minimal weed growth. Continuous surface with cut control joints.
Repairs Individual blocks lift and relay — easiest of the four. Patched in sections; colour match improves with a full bay. Patched and rolled; patches can remain visible. Sections are re-cut; a patch stays visible.
Upkeep Re-sand joints, occasional wash, optional seal. Sweep and wash down; very little else. Very low — occasional wash down. Low — occasional wash and reseal if coloured.
Best suited to Period and traditional houses, driveways where services may need access. Modern frontages, wheelchair and pushchair use, overlaying sound existing drives. Larger areas, long drives and shared access where cost per m² matters. Clean modern frontages and low-maintenance budgets.

Block paving

Laying patterns for a block paved driveway

Block paving can be laid in several bonds — the pattern makes a real difference to how the finished driveway looks and, for herringbone, to how well it locks together under a car's turning wheels.

  • Herringbone — the strongest bond for driveways, because the interlocking angles resist the twisting force of turning wheels.
  • Basketweave — a neat, symmetrical look that suits period properties and courtyard-style frontages.
  • Stretcher bond — a simple, contemporary running pattern, often used with a contrasting border course.

What customers say

Quality you can see, service you can trust

"We'd been putting off doing anything with the driveway for ages, but the team made the whole thing easy. The porcelain patio and block paved driveway turned out better than we expected, and everyone was polite and looked after the property the whole time they were here — even working through some really hot weather. The price was fair too, with no pressure to spend more than we needed to."
Paraphrased from a customer review, Rotherham

Driveway & patio FAQs

Common questions about driveways in Rotherham

The questions we get asked most often when we quote — answered properly.

How much does a new driveway cost in Rotherham?

There is no single price, because the cost depends on the size of the driveway, the surface you choose, the condition of what is there now and how much groundwork is needed. A resin overlay onto a sound existing base costs considerably less than a full dig-out with a new sub-base and drainage.

We measure up on site and give you a free, no-obligation written quote so you know exactly what you are paying for before any work starts. Call 07717 752219.

Which is best — resin, block paving, tarmac or concrete driveways?

Each surface suits a different property and budget. Resin bound gives a smooth, seamless, permeable finish with no loose stone. Block paving gives a traditional patterned look with the widest choice of colours, and individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if ever needed. Tarmac is hard-wearing and cost-effective over larger areas, and concrete gives a clean, low-maintenance surface that can be coloured or textured.

We talk through the trade-offs honestly when we quote, with samples where useful, rather than steering you toward whichever is easiest for us to lay.

How long does a resin driveway take to install and how long does it last?

A resin bound driveway is often laid in a single day once the base is prepared, because the resin and aggregate are mixed and trowelled on site as one seamless surface. On a sound, properly prepared base it is a long-term surface that needs very little maintenance beyond an occasional sweep and hose down.

Resin does need dry weather and a minimum temperature to cure properly, so we schedule pours around the forecast rather than rushing them.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway in Rotherham?

In England you do not need planning permission for a new driveway if the surface is permeable — such as resin bound, permeable block paving or gravel — or if rainwater from a non-permeable surface is directed to a lawn, border or soakaway on your own property.

Permission is required if you lay more than five square metres of impermeable surfacing at the front of the house and let the water run onto the road. Dropping a kerb for a new vehicle crossing is separate and always needs council approval. We will tell you which applies before any work starts.

Can you repair my existing driveway or patio instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. Sunken block paving can usually be lifted, the base re-compacted and the blocks relaid rather than ripped out completely. Cracked tarmac can be patched and re-sealed, and settled slabs on a patio can be re-bedded and re-pointed.

Where the base itself has failed, a repair only masks the problem for a short time, and we would tell you honestly that a proper rebuild is the better long-term option. We inspect first and give you a straight answer either way.

What is the difference between Indian sandstone and porcelain patios?

Indian sandstone is a genuine riven natural stone, so every slab has its own colour variation and a slightly textured surface — the classic choice for a traditional garden patio. Porcelain paving is a manufactured, ultra-dense material with a completely consistent colour; it is virtually non-porous, so it resists staining, frost damage and algae better than any natural stone.

Both are laid on a properly prepared, compacted sub-base — we bring samples of each to your quote.
